We’ve got the temptations of Northern New South Wales and on our doorstep are the island playgrounds of Stradbroke and Moreton. Inland there are mountains, forests and country towns to explore. Of course, there’s always the option of a Brisbane holiday too. Here’s our pick of best escapes within a few hours of the city.

Head west from Brisbane backpackers and you’ll eventually bump into the Great Dividing Range. Ancient Explorers were once lured over the ranges with the prospect of grazing and farming bounty, but today’s backpacker traveller seek cold nights warmed by open fires, sweeping views of farmland and quaint small towns with cosy cabins or bed and breakfast accommodation. Boonah, Toowoomba, Lamington National Park and Kenilworth are on our list of top inland destinations.

Just over the border, this is a blessed part of the world and Brisbane Backpackers are blessed to be so close to it for a city escape. Northern NSW boasts dense rainforests, rows of fruit trees, hippy-influenced towns and miles of beaches. Once a good day’s drive away, improved roads have put northern NSW within easy reach. Among the area’s top spots, Kingscliff, Byron Bay and Hastings Point are all winners.
