COAST AND COUNTRY
OK, you’ve got a few days at Brisbane Backpackers Somewhere to Stay and you want to relax. All you want to do is take a couple of cheap day trips, somewhere near to Brisbane which won’t stretch the budget. Here are some suggestions that will get you out of the hostel and on the road. After all, a change is as good as a holiday.
Have a backpacker day out at Caloundra. Paddle, eat fish and chips, lick an ice-cream, body surf – all at one of the closest beaches to Brisbane. An easy day trip, especially if there’s not much traffic on the highway.
Further up the Sunshine Coast, you come to Mooloolaba. Here you can laze on the pristine white sandy beach, surf some of the best waves and stroll past the shops and cafes afterwards.
Don’t just drive past the exit on your way up the coast or back to Brisbane Backpackers, pull off and take the trip to Bribie. Cross the Bribie Bridge to enjoy the slow-paced charms of this island. Take a cruise up Pumicestone Passage, swim or kayak in the still waters or cross to the surf side and enjoy the small waves of Woorim Beach.
Escape the heat and head for the hills of the Sunshine Coast hinterland. See where milk really comes from when you do a tour of Maleny Dairy. Or swim in the cool water of Gardiners Falls or the deep rock pool of Kondalilla Falls. There is a short bushwalk at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Nab a shady picnic or barbecue spot, watch the bush turkeys and admire the best view on the coast of the Glasshouse Mountains.
Another inland option, this time on the Gold Coast hinterland, is to explore Mt Tamborine. Walk the easy tracks of Queensland’s first national park, eat well at the cafes which feature local produce, and you can even see amazing glow worms. Maybe you’ll be lucky enough to visit when the art and craft market is in town.
